White Cone
Basic information
Sample name: White Cone
Reference: J. A. Baskin. 1979. Small mammals of the Hemphillian age White Cone local fauna, northeastern Arizona. Journal of Paleontology 53(3):695-708 [ER 4085]
Geography
Country: United States
State: Arizona
County: Navajo
Coordinate: 35° 36' N, 110° 5' W
Coordinate basis: based on nearby landmark
Formation: Bidahochi
Time interval: Late Miocene
Ma: 6.69
Age basis: K-Ar
Geography comments: "on the joint-use land of the Navajo and Hopi Indian Tribes" (coordinate base on Whitecone)
"from the upper member of the Bidahochi Formation, approximately 20 m above the volcanic (limburgite tuff) middle member"
said to be late Hemphillian
a K-Ar date of 4.1 Ma published by Evernden et al. (1964) for the middle member is actually from a diatreme "unconformable on the upper member"; there is another date of 6.69 ± 0.16 Ma for "the middle member at Roberts Mesa, approximately 15 km northwest of White Cone" is accepted because the dated basalt "can be traced" into the White Cone section

Environment
Lithology: not described
Habitat comments: there is no description of the lithology or paleoenvironment
Methods
Life forms: carnivores,rodents,other small mammals
Sampling methods: screenwash
Sample size: 266 specimens
Years: 1973
Museum: UALP
Sampling comments: the fossils "are the property of the Navajo and Hopi Indian Tribes and are presently on load at the UALP"
the "Dipoides material" was collected earlier by C. Repenning and J. Lance, but all other fossils were collected by the University Arizona Laboratory of Paleontology in 1973
"screen-washing" was used but there are no further details
